My Story
My guitar playing journey started when I was 8 years old, and it was against my will! I wanted to play drums, but my mom said that I had to learn a different instrument first. This obviously turned out to be a good thing, because guitar changed my life! (Thanks, mom!)
I played acoustic guitar from age 8-14, and got my first electric guitar during my 14th Christmas. It was a simple Squier Telecaster, and I loved it.
The first electric songs I learned were by Tool, and that was also my first introduction to the mighty Drop D tuning.
Learning Tool songs helped me to understand complex rhythmic structures, and also motivated me to move deeper into the world of guitar academia.
On May 13, 2013 I discovered Buckethead. I remember this date because that is his birthday, and everyone on YouTube was commenting about it.
Buckethead got me into technical guitar, and it was all uphill from there!
I then discovered Shrapnel Records, Legato Records, and dozens of guitar greats such as Satch, Vai, Paul Gilbert, Tony Macalpine, Jason Becker, Marty Friendman, and anyone else you can think of.
Fast forward 4 years, and I started teaching guitar at age 18. I put up a flyer in a local music shop, and that was how I taught my first guitar lesson. That lesson was with a middle aged nomad who lived in a van, which was weird to my oblivious 18-year-old self, which I suppose stems from being raised in Idaho.
I could obviously go on forever in my bio… But I just want to get the point across that guitar is a huge part of me, and I hope to leave an evergreen legacy behind that can inspire you and other guitar players for centuries ahead.
Will it actually happen? Only time will tell.
